Importing Photoshop Files Into Flash

As developers who live and breathe Photoshop, we always hated how hard it was to move Photoshop assets into Flash, but Adobe Flash CS3 has seduced us and transformed hate into passionate love. Specifically, we’re head over heels about Flash’s new ability to import Photoshop files, keeping layer (and most other) info intact. And it works with Illustrator files, too! Our first test drive of this feature began when we used Photoshop to mock up a website design for a (fictitious) watch company called Time & Tide.

    I really dislike the Photoshop/Illustrator import.

    First, it is a bit spotty with working with layer effects. Also, I found a lot of the layers I would import had no option to crop, so I got a larger-than-needed image on my stage.

    Next, and the biggest fault, there is no “update”. So if I go and change my photoshop file, I cannot reflect that update in flash. The option of re-importing is not elegant as a new directory structure is created. If you are used to After Effects / Photoshop work where you might drop back and forth from the two apps, this importer will be a disappointment.

    Last, I would like to see the ability for large images to be imported, used on stage, and then the software will make a pass across the stage, scale the images to the best resolution (perhaps multiple times in the case of a timeline scale) and replace those images with the newly sized proxies. Probably one of the biggest time consuming parts of flash is having to size/prep the images in Photoshop where design changes can lead to a whole new blackhole of export/importing time. Having Flash size images automatically for you to create optimized file sizes would be an awesome feature.

    We export out of Photoshop in PNG and import back in to Flash. That way if the client has a change or the designer needs to tweak an image, they just edit the PNG and click “update” and the changes are ready to go. Try that using the Photoshop import…

    Hi Brian,

    Tnx for your comment. I agree that one of the worst feature on adobe pack is the integration of the other programs with flash. Although i must confess that this ability has been one of the priorities of Adobe team, and we have watching good improvements on it. But still far away from what we wish…
